With “Mank,” David Fincher’s new film about the writing of “Citizen Kane,” coming out Friday on Netflix, today’s thread is all about movies that are about other movies.
I think my favorite of that genre is either “Tropic Thunder,” Ben Stiller’s send-up of war films, Oscar-bait films, and the vanity of actors; or the Coen Brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!”, which is a great look at the old Hollywood studio system and is also lowkey one of the most religious films the Coens ever made.
The genre is a favorite in Hollywood, just as the Oscars like to reward actors for playing actors or famous people. But when done right, these movies are a lot of fun.
What’s your favorite movie about the making of a movie? Comment below and check back on Friday for some more thoughts on “Mank.”
Another Jack Black movie, "Be Kind, Rewind" is a classic and definitely inspired me to try my hand and making my own version of my favorite film scenes. Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy's "Bowfinger" is also a ton of fun with some serious guerilla filmmaking in a not so serious movie.
I don’t even care if it’s a gimmick, I truly love The Artist.
